Jack Dorsey Unveils Location-Based Chat Feature for Decentralized BitChat App
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and a prominent advocate for decentralized technologies, has announced a significant upgrade to BitChat—a peer-to-peer messaging app operating on decentralized networks. The new "location chat" feature leverages geohashes to map global conversations, allowing users to connect within specific regions or teleport to VIRTUAL chat channels worldwide. Each interaction uses a unique pseudonym tied to the geohash, reinforcing privacy by design.
The update, currently under App Store review, marks BitChat's evolution from a niche messaging tool to a more interactive platform. Dorsey's vision aligns with his longstanding support for open protocols like Nostr, emphasizing censorship-resistant communication. Messages are routed through decentralized relays, bypassing traditional internet infrastructure—a feature particularly valuable in regions with connectivity restrictions.
